"Those words made it formal: the tree was ours."
CONNOTATION ANNOTATION
In this quote,
Hosseini's choice of words reveals how much Amir values his friendship with Hassan. It is no secret that Hassan is Amir's servant. Amir is much high in social class than Hassan could ever be because of their ethnic races. Amir and Hassan grew up together and even though Amir would never admit it as a child, he grew very close to Hassan. Hosseini chooses the phrase "the tree was ours" rather than "the tree was mine" to show that Amir valued Hassan and his friendship. Amir is of higher class and could have easily claimed the tree to be his without having to include Hassan but Amir does include him. Hosseini's choice of words reinforces the value of friendship in Afghanistan.
